role of soviet union
Think of a Presidential Election. Each candidate receives votes from people. These people vote for them and offer "support" because they agree with the candidate's beliefs and/or ideas. Now apply that to the Korea War. Do you see the relationship?
When North Korea invaded the South, America- among several other countries- came to it's rescue. This is because America and these other nations believed and supported the same things-or similar ideas- the South Koreans did. The same goes for North Korea.
Just as South Korea had it's allies, the North did as well. North Korea's major allies were China and the Soviet Union. All three of these nations agreed with the idea of communism. The Soviet Union supplied weaponry, trained North Korean armed forces and its experienced World War II generals devised the plan for the invasion.
At first, Joseph Stalin was reluctant to invade South Korea because of the threat war with the U.S might be the outcome. By 1950, however, his opinion changed. This was partly because the USSR had successfully tested their first atomic bomb in 1949. This would make the U.N more cautious when it came to the USSR and it's military, he believed. He also felt that America would not support South Korea is North Korea invaded.
The Soviet Union made it easier for North Korea to invade which is exact;y what they wanted them to do. They didn't want to go against America themselves or invade South Korea because they didn't want a war with the U.S. The Soviet Union wanted to spread it's idea of communism as much as possible- even if it meant forcing their beliefs on nations. However, their tension with America would soon lead to their own battle.
